Shadows in Color: “Dark Paradise” by Lana Del Rey

If there was ever a spontaneous music video, this would be it.

But seriously. Thanks to the blizzard named Nemo, I found myself cooped inside my room for a few hours too long. Couple that with the Lana Del Rey kick I’ve been on recently, and oo la la. Maybe oo la la isn’t the best way to put it, but you can be the judge of that.

I glanced around my room looking for inspiration. Ironically, the big blank wall caught my attention. Then began creation.

I simply filmed myself singing the lyrics (and if you look closely enough…oops, I messed up some of the lyrics), and the rest of the effects were performed in post production. I threw on mirror effects any which way I could, and added the gradients to the chorus to emphasize the difference between dark and color – the difference between erotic and not. During the final chorus, you can find a moment where my my actual self grazes the chin of my mirror-self. Holla erotica.

For a sensual woman, I made a sensual video. Have at me.

Beat Goes On: A Short Film

My most recent short film was actually filmed and produced in September of 2012 while I was studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, but YouTube prevented me from sharing it with the world. But now I’m finally able to share it with you all!

“Beat Goes On” depicts the story of a, shall we say, nomadic female who survives on publicly playing the drums, um, badly. Like, really badly. Played by my good friend Lindsay Kirk, the drummer meets a passerby, played by myself, who takes an interest in her that the drummer misinterprets as something more.

Soundtracked by two of my favorite songs, Norah Jones’ “Good Morning” and Sky Ferreira’s 2012 breakout single “Everything Is Embarrassing,” this lil film became the beautiful art I never actually intended to make. I found that making “Beat Goes On” involved a much harder look at how an edit can affect the entire emotional scope of the project. Because of this, the drummer’s sad fate becomes a lot more upsetting than I originally intended. In a good way.

I know I’m biased, being the director of the whole film, but I always feel empathetic for the drummer. Everyone’s experienced being led on by someone.

But, you know, the heartbeat always goes on.

In the Land of Gandalf: Australia, Part 8

Once the study abroad program ended, a few of us travelled to New Zealand before we went home for good.

Can you spot a Hobbit?

Gangnam Style Down Under: “Sydney Style”

I was asked to make a parody video of Gangnam Style to promote the Boston University study abroad program in Sydney, Australia. I just mashed clips together from my documentary/video  blog series and dubbed my voice into the audio.

The intro is actually a graphic I created on AfterEffects…I’ll get into that eventually. Stay tuned!

And then…magic! BU Sydney Style.

Greetings from the Great Barrier Reef: Australia, Part 5

Since America’s fall is Australia’s spring, us Two Biddies and a Bloke got to have a second spring break in a year! We took the time to travel around the country, from caving in the Jenolan Caves, to dolphin watching in Port Stephens, to scuba diving in the Great Barrier Reef, and bungy jumping in Cairns.

I can hardly breathe after saying all that.

Join us as we explore new heights and depths in the world. You won’t be disappointed.

Hangin’ 10 Down Under: Australia, Part 4

The end of September brought on a week of eternal craziness. In a good way. The Two Biddies and a Bloke found themselves taking a field trip to the shopping-centric city of Melbourne in Victoria. We travelled the Great Ocean Road to spot kangaroos in the wild and to view the beauty of the Twelve Apostles. The day following our return to Sydney, we climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge. For real. And just the next day, we took off to just south of Sydney for a weekend at Surf Camp to learn how to surf (or just to do it for the photo).

Did I mention that all happened in ONE WEEK? Study abroad hasn’t failed us yet.

Hang ten with us below.

Just Like Mary-Kate & Ashley: Australia, Part 3

Well into our semester in Sydney, Australia, us Two Biddies and a Bloke decided to ramp up the fun in the land down under. This video  blog takes us around Manly, to the Powerhouse Museum, to the famous Toronga Zoo, and to Luna Park, Sydney’s amusement park-turned-famous from the Mary-Kate & Ashley flick, Our Lips are Sealed.

The whole thing is basically a marrying of the night and day.

Antics beginning in five…four…three…

BFFs With Kangaroos: Australia, Part 2

The second installment of Two Biddies and a Bloke continued with an excursion to the Blue Mountains. Along the way, we stopped at a wildlife park to pet some koalas and (omg) play with and feed kangaroos.

We realized that after we hiked to the bottom of the Blue Mountains that we had to get back up somehow…what were we to do? Take the world’s steepest roller coaster of course!

Scream away.

Lost in Oz: Australia, Part 1

The adventures of Two Biddies and a Bloke begin here, with the first installment of our video blog/documentary series as we study abroad in Australia. We kept referring to the entire project as video blogging, but it more or less turned into a documentary of adventuring through the land down under. I approached the entire production as illustrating our assimilation of three Americans into Australian culture. Whether or not that venture succeeded is up to my viewers.

This installment features our meeting the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge along with moving into our apartment in Sydney.

Fly away with us.

The “Wonder” of New York & Emeli Sandé

If there was ever such a thing as a spontaneous music video, this would be it.

I was visiting my best friend, Maura, and her sister, Alison, in NYC one weekend in the summer of 2012. As I stepped off the train in Grand Central, I just felt the overwhelming power to love the city…as largely corny as that sounds. I whipped out my little digital camera and just shot anything as I walked by. The city in its natural state. The city when no one was watching.

Maura and Alison became mini stars of the video in the process. Maura was none-too-fond of my choosing her spread-eagle shot being the cover photo for the video, but we laugh about it now. We’ve been best friends for quite some time.

I also chose the video to be the opportunity to experiment with the Chroma Key/green screen effect. I used the moving shots from the train as my backdrop and filmed against as solid a color wall as I could find. It was mostly successful, I believe, for the little experimentation I’ve done with it and considering the lack of equipment I have.

“Wonder” is such an interesting visual to watch, so I hope it entrances you.

Marvel below.
