“The Biggest Loser Australia” Opening Titles

While interning with ZSPACE in Australia in 2012, I helped the crew work on the pitch and pre-production for the new opening titles to Australia’s “The Biggest Loser: The Next Generation.”

My duties included helping the company prepare their pitch to the showrunners in order to get the job. Once we (hooray!) got the job, we had to scout locations and plan out the logistics of the actual shoot. I unfortunately had to leave the country before the shoot happened, as my study abroad program had ended, but the final product is ultimately an emotive piece of work. I’m proud of the work the company did with this, capturing the strength of Cyndi Lauper’s track to represent the strength the competitors need to discover and embody.

“The Great Australian Bake-Off” Opening Titles

While working as an intern with ZSPACE in 2012, I had a hand in the creation of the opening titles for a new show on Channel 9 in Australia, titled “The Great Australian Bake-Off.”

My roles included first editing a pre-animatic so the Creative Director could piece together the timings of the 3D animations before we actually went out and shot the footage. Once it was time to shoot, I traveled with the crew to the outskirts of Sydney (almost near the Outback!) to witness some true Aussie living, and capture some of the iconic Aussie footage that the 3D artists would then turn into food.

It was an amazing learning experience, seeing how the process of adding animations to raw footage. There was much back and forth involved with arranging the soundtrack so the animations were timed correctly and didn’t appear disjointed. It was interesting to note the differences the director and 3D artists noted, both criticisms leading to a perfect and fun polished clip.

The final product is below:

Jurlique’s ‘Purely White’ Campaign

During my time as an intern at ZSPACE as a part of my BU Study Abroad in Australia, I acted as a production assistant on a shoot for cosmetic company Jurlique’s ‘Purely White’ Campaign, aiding the creation of various Expert and How-To videos. I logged data, managed props, and filmed behind-the scenes footage, some of which can be viewed in the promo ZSPACE made for the project below.

BU Study Abroad: Dear Orientation Me…

The following video was quickly strung together to be used for the Boston University Class of 2017 Orientation sessions this summer. It features your very own Two Biddies and a Bloke!

Freedom in Travel: Dido’s “No Freedom”

For my FX Editing class this semester, we were tasked one week to create a music video using any techniques we had learned in AfterEffects, Photoshop, and Avid thus far. The goal of the video was to present something about ourselves – sort a biographical film piece.

I could’ve easily chosen to make a high-energy jump rope video, since I’d been competing and demo-ing for twelve or thirteen years of my life. But coming back from abroad made me nostalgic for all the travelling I’ve done, and so I chosen to present the scope of the world through my eyes. I decided to show Africa, Australia, and New Zealand using Dido’s newest song “No Freedom.”

I chose “No Freedom” not because of my bias towards Dido’s easy harkening of nostalgia and emotion in general, but because the lyrics of the song created the sense of finding freedom in doing what you love. I love travelling. And I hope this video shows it.

“No freedom without love.”

P.S. Happy 60th post!

Beat Goes On: A Short Film

My most recent short film was actually filmed and produced in September of 2012 while I was studying abroad in Sydney, Australia, but YouTube prevented me from sharing it with the world. But now I’m finally able to share it with you all!

“Beat Goes On” depicts the story of a, shall we say, nomadic female who survives on publicly playing the drums, um, badly. Like, really badly. Played by my good friend Lindsay Kirk, the drummer meets a passerby, played by myself, who takes an interest in her that the drummer misinterprets as something more.

Soundtracked by two of my favorite songs, Norah Jones’ “Good Morning” and Sky Ferreira’s 2012 breakout single “Everything Is Embarrassing,” this lil film became the beautiful art I never actually intended to make. I found that making “Beat Goes On” involved a much harder look at how an edit can affect the entire emotional scope of the project. Because of this, the drummer’s sad fate becomes a lot more upsetting than I originally intended. In a good way.

I know I’m biased, being the director of the whole film, but I always feel empathetic for the drummer. Everyone’s experienced being led on by someone.

But, you know, the heartbeat always goes on.

In the Land of Gandalf: Australia, Part 8

Once the study abroad program ended, a few of us travelled to New Zealand before we went home for good.

Can you spot a Hobbit?

Farewell, Sydney: Australia, Part 7

This penultimate episode of Two Biddies and a Bloke documents every little detail of our final days in Sydney. We have Thanksgiving dinner, see some wild kangaroos, and give the whole city one giant hug goodbye.

Next up, New Zealand!

An Aussie Halloween: Australia, Part 6

Towards the end of October, something happened to us Two Biddies and a Bloke. We saw Christmas decorations. Everywhere.

There’s nothing more shocking than seeing one holiday occur before another, so seeing Christmas trees before Halloween even took place was completely jarring. But since Australia doesn’t celebrate Australia (something which is now changing), we had to make due with what we had.

Which meant celebrating Halloween like us Americans would.

This installment also sees us going to the Opera House to see “Blue Planet” live, in concert. We also woke up at some ungodly hour to watch the sunrise at Bondi Beach. What good travelers we are.

Gangnam Style Down Under: “Sydney Style”

I was asked to make a parody video of Gangnam Style to promote the Boston University study abroad program in Sydney, Australia. I just mashed clips together from my documentary/video  blog series and dubbed my voice into the audio.

The intro is actually a graphic I created on AfterEffects…I’ll get into that eventually. Stay tuned!

And then…magic! BU Sydney Style.
